Molybdenum is a trace mineral and also considered as an essential mineral for the body. It is required for the overall health. Although, there is no clear recommendation about daily intake of molybdenum but 10-15 milligrams per day is considered safe and adequate. Because our body needs it in a small amount normal or regular diet is enough to get adequate amount of molybdenum. This trace mineral is found in the soil where the plant grows and it is absorbed by the plants and our body gets it from the plant foods. It plays an important role in the metabolism of iron.

Molybdenum is made of many enzymes or it is a component of many enzymes. One of the major enzymes of molybdenum is sulfite oxidase which is important in the metabolism of sulfur amino acids. Other important enzymes of molybdenum are xanthine oxidase, alldehyde oxidase, purines, and pyramidenes. Molybdenum is also known for its antioxidant characteristics. It helps to break sulfite toxins build up in the body and thus prevents any allergic reaction. The trace mineral molybdenum can be found in many natural sources and in normal diet. Supplements of molybdenum are also easily available.

Molybdenum can easily be found in legumes, nuts, grain products, fruits and vegetables, and leafy vegetables are very good sources of molybdenum. It can also be found in milk or low fat milk, liver, kidney, cereals and rice. The hard tap water is also a good source of molybdenum.

Anyone that eats a good and healthy diet should be able to get enough molybdenum in their diet. A person eating a vegan diet will be able to get plenty of molybdenum through their diet by eating plenty of legumes, nuts, whole grains, rice, fruits and vegetables.

The amount of molybdenum found in plant foods will depend on the soil the food is grown in and the amount of molybdenum in the soil.

Molybdenum is essential for the metabolism of the fats, carbs, nitrogen and copper. It also helps to process iron and circulate it from liver to the rest of the body. Molybdenum is responsible for certain chemical reactions in the body. It helps sulfite oxidase in transformation of sulfite to sulphate, which is important for the metabolism of amino acids that contain sulphur. With xanthine oxidase, it forms uric acid by breaking down nucleotides. Molybdenum is also a confactor of aldehyde oxidase. Aldehyde oxidase plays an important role in the metabolism of drugs and toxins.

Molybdenum is crucial for human health. It can help body to manage a good blood sugar levels. It is also good against tooth decay. In addition, molybdenum for its antioxidant properties helps prevent cancer.

Although, molybdenum deficiency is rare but in case of molybdenum deficiency symptoms such as irritability and irregular heartbeat can occur. In male, this deficiency can cause of impotency. It can also cause decrease amounts of urine production and problems with mouth and vision. Molybdenum deficiency symptoms can be headaches, nausea, night blindness, anemia and mental problems. Lack of molybdenum in the body can lead to stomach and esophageal cancers.

Molybdenum toxicity is rare but excessive intake of molybdenum can cause diarrhea, joint pain and swelling as well.

Molybdenum is usually safe in supplemental form if the amount does not exceed 1.5 to 2 mg. New York University Langone Medical Center advises that people with serious kidney disease should talk to their physician before taking molybdenum or any other supplement.

Since molybdenum creates uric acid in the body, very high levels of molybdenum in the diet and or with supplements can cause gout.
