Cranberries like other berries- are a wonderful fruit for the health. They provide many health benefits. But among those benefits most talked about are anti-oxidant benefits. According to the research cranberries are among the top five foods with the highest antioxidant content per serving.

Anti-oxidants are essential for protecting cells from oxidative damage. Oxidative damage and stress can lead to many dangerous diseases. By preventing cellular damage anti-oxidants manage to prevent heart disease, cancer, skin disease and immune system related diseases. These compounds are founds in many vegetables and fruits. Anti-oxidants help to reduce the free radical and the damages that are done by free radicals. Excessive free radicals in the body can lead to cellular damage and as a result we face many life threatening diseases. These anti-oxidants are including Vitamin C, Vitamin E and phytonutrients such as quercetin, kaempferol, anthocyanins, epicatechins, coumaric acids, vanillic acids and ferulic acids. Most of the health benefits of cranberries come from these strong anti-oxidant properties. Cranberry juice is a very popular drink and it is commonly consumed to get cranberry health benefits. But it should be noted that fruit juice doesn’t provide all the health benefits. Cranberries like any other fruits should be consumed as a whole fruit to get all the phytonutrients and conventional nutrients benefits. The skin and the flesh of the cranberries contain lots of nutrients and they should be eaten raw or unprocessed. Cranberry juice significantly reduces the amounts of vital nutrients and thus the anti-oxidant properties.

Anti-oxidant properties of cranberries provide heart health benefits, anti-cancer benefits and immune system health benefits. Along with other important phytonutrients, a stilbenoid called Pterostilbene also plays extremely important role in the prevention of cancer and metabolism of cholesterol. It only proves how much rich cranberries are with anti-oxidant properties. Overall, cranberries are a super fruit for the health. Eating cranberries on a regular basis can really boost the anti-oxidant activities in the body.
